Initiative 71
In January 2022, Initiative 71 refers to a ballot initiative in Washington, D.C., that was approved by voters in November 2014. Initiative 71 legalized the recreational use of marijuana for adults aged 21 and older in the District of Columbia. The initiative allowed individuals to possess and use limited amounts of marijuana for personal use, as well as to grow a limited number of marijuana plants at home.

Initiative 81
In January 2022, Initiative 81 was a ballot measure in Washington, D.C., related to the decriminalization of certain psychedelic substances, specifically entheogenic plants and fungi. The initiative aimed to make the investigation and arrest of individuals for non-commercial planting, cultivating, purchasing, transporting, distributing, possessing, and/or engaging in practices with entheogenic plants and fungi the lowest law enforcement priority.
The proposed initiative was part of a broader trend in various jurisdictions to reevaluate drug policies, with a focus on the potential therapeutic benefits of certain psychedelics. Advocates argued that these substances could have positive effects on mental health and well-being when used responsibly and under the guidance of healthcare professionals.
